Gertrude's Cat

Difficulty: Easy

Length: Short

Reward: 1525 cooking xp, Chocolate cake, stew, kitten, 1 Quest Point

Requirements: none, although level 5 fishing could help.

Items needed: raw sardine (hence the level 5 fishing), bucket of milk, doogle leaf (can get during the quest), 100gp.

Why you should do this quest: This is a great quest – easy to do and yet you get a great reward – a kitten. Although it may not sound good, it really is. Apart from the fact that cats look cool, you can sell grown cats to citizens in west Ardougne for 100 death runes (provided you have done the Biohazard quest)! See notes about cat care at bottom of page.

How to start: Speak to Gertrude by the small house outside Varrock's west gate.

Talk to Gertrude about her cat (Fluffs – original name, eh?), and she will tell you that it has gone missing. She will also tell you to talk to her two children; Shilop and Wilough. If you haven't already done so, pick up a doogle leaf from behind the house (the south side), and use it on the sardine to make a seasoned sardine.

Next, go to Varrock center and talk to either Shilop or Wilough. They will you that the cat is at their “secret playground”, but to find out where the playground is, the boys will make you give them 100gp (kids these days!).

The next step is to head to the lumber yard on the eastern side of Varrock (right next to the Jolly Boar Inn).

Head over to the ladder and climb up it so that you are on the second floor. You should be able to see Fluffs. Try to pick her up, but it will scratch you and inflict 3 damage on you (Fluffs? How misleading can you get??). A message will pop up saying the cat is thirsty. Give it the bucket of milk and repeat the procedure (yet more scratchings!). This time, the message will say that the cat is hungry, so feed it the seasoned sardine. Attempt to pick it up one more time (not again, I here you shout) and discover that it doesn't want to leave. This time, however, the message says that you can here a kitten mewing.

Go down the ladder and search all the pinkish crates until you find the kitten (can't help you with which box – it's random for each player). Once you find it, take the kitten up to Fluffs and give it to her. She will run off home (finally!)

Return to Gertrude and collect your well earned reward!

QUEST COMPLETE!

Notes on Cat Care:

Getting a New Cat

If you ever lose or sell your cat, you can be another one from Gertrude for the meagre fee of 100gp. You cannot choose the colour of your cat unless you have done the Garden of Tranquillity quest and have the Ring of Charos (u). In this case, just select the charn option and pick whatever colour you like!

Raising Your Cat

Cats will take a while to grow and will not grow whilst in your bank or inventory, so it's best to have them following you when you're doing something that involves going to and from a bank (i.e., smelting bars, chopping trees, the ideal time to do it is when you're fishing in Catherby). A message will come up saying either the kitten is hungry or needs attention. If it is hungry, feed it a fish (see below for details on which fish you can use) or give it a bucket of milk. If it requires attention, either stroke it or give it a ball of wool to play with. If three of these messages go ignored, your cat will run away. Your kitten will grow to a cat in around 3 ? hours of playing time (NOT in your bank or inventory) and your cat will grow into and overgrown cat after about 4 hours of playing time (so a 7 ? hour transition from kitten to overgrown cat).

Your Cat in the World

Your cat will follow you everywhere: if you go on ships, teleport, fly on magic carpets, travel via spirit tree; your cat will remain faithfully behind you. HOWEVER! If you die, you will not keep your cat, even if it is your only, or most valuable possession.

Talking to Your Cat

Provided you have done the Icthlarin's Little Helper quest, you will be able to communicate with your cat using the Catspeak amulet. Not only can you talk to your cat, you can talk to other NPC's cats (Bob the Jagex cat and others).

Rat Catching

Another great way to pass the time with your cat is to chase rats! simply right-click on your cat and select ‘chase-vermin' Kittens have a low chance of success when doing this, cats: a higher chance, and overgrown cats: no chance at all (think of them as retired old cats). When you do the Ratcatchers quest, catching vermin takes on a whole new level, evolving into some classy minigames. If your cat catches 100 rats it will be awarded a special medal (the medal is purely decorative and has no real use).

Food list

You can feed your cat:
  • Milk
  • Sardines (raw/cooked)
  • Tuna (raw/cooked)
  • Mackerel (raw/cooked)
  • Trout (raw only)
  • Anchovies (raw only)
  • Salmon (raw only)
  • Shrimp (raw only)

For a real treat, spice up the fish with a seasoning of doogle leaves!
so how long will it take to overgrow your cat ,
